Skull & Bones was destined to be in rough waters. Ubisoft is in shambles and any game with an almost 7 year gap from announcement will likely struggle to perform. They tried finding a buyer to rescue them around a year ago among the toxic management fallout that surfaced.
AC Shadows was planned to be the last AC game to feature said fake RPG-like mechanics, with later games supposed to go back to the earlier games' style of gameplay (and hopefully narrative-telling). - AC Hex has been internally deemed to be "the gayest AC yet", with lots of female characters and lesbian relationships, and little masculine presence.

And back then- many of the new games were game formats that had not been seen before. It was interesting, gameplay was challenging, and building machines had a bit of voodoo involved with it. Today- well... you know the complaints. Everyone is an expert. Big companies are selling designs that people pioneered in their bedroom or home office.
I'm sure the game had plenty of bad gameplay designs, but bad gameplay doesn't matter if no one plays the game to begin with. And people didn't play it because the characters were ugly. It's a hero shooter with bad hero design. Bad decisions ran deep in that company. Sony made the right call shutting down the company.
Again, Star Wars Jedi Survivor had a normal looking guy as a protagonist and that was fine. Kay Vess looking like Eric Stoltz in Mask is a problem. I think Outlaws has bigger issues given the bugs and broken combat / stealth systems it has but I still think her having the cheek bones of Red Skull or Skeletor is a valid complaint.
