The 13B is the most widely produced rotary engine. It was the basis for all future Mazda Wankel engines, and was produced for over 30 years. The 13B has no relation to the 13A. Instead, it is a lengthened version of the 12A, having 80 mm (3.1 in) thick rotors.
This was powered by the 13B rotary engine, offered in naturally aspirated or turbocharged forms. The third-generation RX-7, sometimes referred to as the FD, was offered a 2+2-seater coupé with a limited run of a two-seater option. Some markets were only available as a two-seater. It featured a sequentially turbocharged 13B REW engine.
Premiers were shipped to Japan without engines or transmissions, and Mazda fitted a 1.3-liter 13B Wankel engine into the bay. It was the first large Japanese car to meet the 1975 emissions standards, although that was a short-lived distinction because the Nissan President followed suit a month later.
The Wankel engine (/ˈvaŋkəl̩/, VUN-kell) is a type of internal combustion engine using an eccentric rotary design to convert pressure into rotating motion. The concept was proven by German engineer Felix Wankel, followed by a commercially feasible engine designed by German engineer Hanns-Dieter Paschke. [1]
The Revelation was an Australian special edition of the RX-8 with a limited production run of 100 cars. The model incorporated the top specification features of the standard RX-8 with the 9-speaker Bose sound system, sand beige colored leather seats, more piano black accents on the interior, and came with the same 13B Renesis rotary engine.
Although Mazda is well known for their Wankel "rotary" engines, the company has been manufacturing piston engines since the earliest years of the Toyo Kogyo company. Early on, they produced overhead camshaft, aluminum blocks, and an innovative block containing both the engine and transmission in one unit.
Mazda America used the Mazda Cosmo name and offered it from 1976 through 1978, fitted with the 13B rotary engine. [6] In the United States, the Cosmo was replaced by the smaller, lighter, and sportier Mazda RX-7. Due to its poor sales as an export, the Series II version, built from 1979, was not exported and remained a Japanese domestic sale only.
Aside from the regular piston-engined variants, the 12A or 13B rotary engines were on offer. The piston-engined variants were exported as the Mazda 929. A rotary-engined version was exported to "general issue" countries and sold as an RX-9. Most RX-9s were sold with the smaller 12A engine. Engines:
