According to Costa Rica's Municipal Code, mayors are elected every four years by the population of the canton. [5] As of the latest municipal elections in 2024, the National Liberation Party candidate, Juan Diego González Picado, was elected mayor of the canton with 33.09% of the votes, with Pilar Porras Zúñiga and Diana Murillo Murillo as first and second vice mayors, respectively.
"La Fortuna" is Spanish for "The Fortune", and aptly named due its ample supply of tourist attractions and extremely fertile lands. Although there is a common myth that the town got its name due to its sparing from the Arenal Volcano's eruptions, the town actually got its name before the latest eruption cycle and was named for the fertile lands ("The Fortune") where it is located.
San Carlos River, near Muelle. The San Carlos River (Spanish: Rio San Carlos) is a river in the Alajuela Province of Costa Rica that drains into the San Juan River and thus into the Caribbean Sea. Its basin covers an area of about 3,100 km2. The river has a length of 142 km of which about 60 km allow navigation.
Its head, the city of Aguas Zarcas, from where it has an excellent view of the hills of the Juan Castro Blanco National Park, is located 16.6 km (30 minutes) NE of Quesada, and 88.4 km (2 hours 20 minutes) to the NW of San José the capital of the nation.
Quesada has an area of 144 km 2 [3] and an elevation of 656 metres. [1] It is located at the foot of the Cordillera Central (Central Mountain Range) on the southern edge of the San Carlos Plain, an expansive lowland that forms a major part of the Caribbean slope in northern Costa Rica.

[1] with a range between 100 and 600 meters above sea level.This variation of altitude is due to the fact that the southern part of the district is formed by the mountain foothills of the Central Mountain Range, while to the north, the territory follows a clear descent towards the plains of San Carlos.
