So I love the kensei monk. I love it so much I want to marry it. Let's talk about weapon selection! The obvious choices are the most damaging ones -- the battleaxe, longsword, and warhammer are Versatile (d10), and the longbow is a respectable d8 with great range. These weapons are also among the ones most frequently found as magic items.
So, shuriken are basically daggers, right? And monks can use their martial arts ability with monk weapons, right? So at high levels, a monk can throw four "shuriken" at d10 a piece by spending 1 ki. I just got a flashback to the ninjas handbook and anime from my pubescent years. Excuse me while I change my pants, because that is friggin awesome!
In the case of the elven monk I would rule that as a monk weapon the longsword must be used 2H while only getting the 1d8 damage. That way it is functionally equivalent to a staff used 2H, which is a monk weapon. (The player could still narrate it being held in one hand; the main point is that nothing can be held in the off-hand.)
Hi Guys Im currently playing HotDQ. I am a Tiefling Monk at level 3. Why i understand monks are primarily melee fighters i was wondering how i could incorporate a little range fighting with decent damage possibly without losing my extra attack. Im very close to level 4 and was wondering if to...
So basically, the turn of a 5th level or higher monk attacking looks like this: 1. Move up to your speed - either before, after, or in between attacks. 2. Attack as your action, making two strikes with a monk weapon or an unarmed strike. 3. Bonus action - one of these alternatives: 3a: One extra attack with your unarmed strike, without paying ...

Most other classes can get +1-3 weapons, spell attacks, or to save DCs. I think one of the adventures had a bad-guy-themed +1 unarmed attack weapon, but is there any general equivalent that will add to hit/damage of their unarmed attacks? Especially with weapons there are ones that add in lots of special effects as well.
As the PHB mentions, most weapons for monks can easily be reskinned for a more asian feel/look. To that end, here are said weapons with their Chinese / Japanese equivalents (or Shou / Kozakuran in the Realms). If there's enough interest I can extend the reskinned list to cover martial weapons...
If the DM doesn't use errata then unarmed strikes are weapons; they are listed as such on page 149 amongst all other weapons. Monks don't have a special "monk strike" attack, they just alter the damage of their "normal" unarmed strikes. Stunning Strike will still work.
Certain monasteries use specialized forms of the monk Weapons. For example, you might use a club that is two lengths of wood connected by a short chain (called a nunchaku) or a Sickle with a shorter, straighter blade (called a kama). Whatever name you use for a monk weapon, you can use the game Statistics provided for the weapon. Ki
