Greenland's climate is a tundra climate (Köppen ET) on and near the coasts and an ice cap climate (Köppen EF) in inland areas. It typically has short, cool summers and long, moderately cold winters. Due to Gulf Stream influences, Greenland's winter temperatures are very mild for its latitude.
Greenland’s climate on land is very much affected by the sea and the sun. The coastal stretches near the open sea are cooler and more humid due to the cold water or drifting ice, and the more inland you go towards the ice sheet, the warmer and dryer it gets.
We are in the mildest area of Greenland, in fact the average temperature exceeds 10 °C (50 °F) for three months of the year, and 6 °C (43 °F) for five months, from May to September. From 1991 to 2020, the coldest record is -32 °C (-25.5 °F) and the highest is 23.7 °C (74.5 °F).
The climate of Greenland is Arctic, modified only by the slight influence of the Gulf Stream in the southwest. Rapid weather changes, from sunshine to impenetrable blizzards, are common and result from the eastward progression of low-pressure air masses over a permanent layer of cold air above the island’s icy interior.
We show the climate in Greenland by comparing the average weather in 4 representative places: Qaqortoq, Sisimiut, Danmarkshavn, and Thule Air Base. You can add or remove cities to customize the report to your liking.
