Depending on what you are using it for, you might instead try methyl hydrate, which is basically methanol. It's readily available at Canadian Tire and hardware stores.
19,216. Location: So. California Mountains. Greetings, Fellow Stovies, Well, it appears that the "rumor" that CA had banned Denatured Alcohol, are true. The California Air Resources Board, or CARB, has definitely banned Methylated Spirits, and all other Denatured Alcohol fuels!! Looks like the did after a big "teleconference", this past June!!
455 posts. 68 upvotes. Update to the thread. I bought bioethanol at Canadian Tire years ago for a torch light. I also need denatured alcohol to clean the granite countertop bottom for a kitchen sink replacement but I don't know if bioethanol is the same as denatured alcohol. Canadian Tire still carries the bioethanol for $44 for a jug. Link.
Dec 4, 2016. Messages: 298. You have 3 choices: 1) You can buy Crown (Alcohol) fuel from REI, which is an ethyl/methyl mix; 2) you can somehow get ahold of pure ethanol; or 3) you can buy HEET from almost anywhere, which is pure methanol but in a different bottle. My favorite is pure ethanol.
Cost: 1/1.50 or 66.7% of HEET. Notes: Beyond the mild isopropyl combustion stink this is a good compromise mix as the cost unit is 1/1.5 of HEET. 1:1 (8ml/8ml) Sooting: None. Stink: No isopropyl stink, lightly "sweet" methanol burning smell present. Warmup/Blooming: Rapidly comes to a bloom with blue flames.
At $1.50 a quart pre-pandemic prices, 91% alcohol is about 13k BTUs per dollar. At $8.86 a gallon prices, white gas is about 14.5k BTUs per dollar. In my experience, the 1/32" jet on the Whisperlite Universal outputs a lot of heat when the bottle has a lot of pressure to it. Reflector, Nov 4, 2020.
Anyway, several substitutes were suggested, including Heet (the automotive fuel line de-icer. The yellow container is the one the company suggests for use as a fuel), 90% isopropyl, EverClear and probably some others. I've tried some of them with varied results. Recently someone told me to go look on Amazon.
A picture would help immensely. The Optimus 80 burns Coleman fuel, also known as white gasoline, naptha, and camp fuel among other names. They are a good little stove although a bit tippy and bear constant watching. Coleman fuel has much more energy than Denatured Alcohol so you'll use a lot less.
BRASSLITE talk about recommended fuel here. Acceptable Fuels for Brasslite Stoves: S-L-X Brand Denatured Alcohol is widely available in the paint department of most Home Depot stores in the USA. Available in both quart and gallon, this is the least expensive and highest quality choice for fueling alcohol stoves.
Once denatured, ethanol can be sold without liquor taxes and regulations, for example. 97% isopropyl alcohol is available at any pharmacy...and it's cheap. you can also find it at Canadian Tire in the camping supplies section. Hard to find in large quantities because it is a substance used in the manufacturing of Meth.
