Vanderkloof is a town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is located on the Orange River and near the Rolfontein Nature Reserve. The village is on the site of the Vanderkloof Dam, (formerly the P.K. le Roux Dam), 9 km north-east of Petrusville. It was established to house the labour force constructing the dam.
Vanderkloof Dam is the second-largest dam in South Africa (in volume), having the highest dam wall in the country at 108 metres (354 ft). The dam was commissioned in 1977; it has a capacity of 3,187.557 million cubic metres (2,584,195 acre⋅ft) and a surface area of 133.43 square kilometres (51.52 sq mi) when full.

The route continues south-east and becomes co-signed with the R48 southwards for 19 kilometres. While co-signed with the R48, it bypasses Vanderkloof to the west and passes through Petrusville. Leaving the R48 south of Petrusvile, the route heads south-south-east to end near Colesberg at an interchange with the N1, the R717 and the R58. [1]
