i dunno, haved gotten the red ring of death since my 3rd xbox (had this one over a year). when i got it, it usually happened within 30 minutes of turning on the xbox, so if your xbox can handle an hour plus of gaming you're probably fine. (got the achievement on my first xbox by the way).

3 rings = general hardware failure (red rings of death) 4 rings = AV cable isn't plugged in all the way if you are getting three rings that is the infamous red rings of death. you may be able to let it cool and it will work again but your xbox probably does not have much longer to live. you should send it in to microsoft and get it reparied
You need to check if your console is a Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon, or Jasper. In that order the worst one is the Xenon, and the best one is the Jasper. Xenon and Zephyrs were a disaster. Falcon's were much better. Jaspers were pratically fixed of any red ring of death issues.
I played through at least one, maybe two full games, then got a Red Ring Of Death on my 360. Someone told me that Dead Rising could cause those because the 360 has trouble processing the number of zombies on the screen, or something to that effect. I managed to get it fixed by Microsoft for free since it was still under warranty.
