Elkin was born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Chicago from age three onwards. [2] He did both his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, receiving a bachelor's degree in English in 1952 and a Ph.D. in 1961 for his dissertation on William Faulkner.
Harvey Laffoon (1897-1978) was the owner, publisher and editor of The Elkin Tribune for 42 years, beginning in 1926. He was inducted into the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame in 2002. [2] In 1949, the paper expanded from a weekly to bi-weekly.
