Google maps has added street view to the villages around Mt. Everest, allowing users to virtually explore Nepal's Khumbu region and trek to Everest Base Camp.
The closest sea to Mount Everest's summit is the Bay of Bengal, almost 700 km (430 mi) away. To approximate a climb of the entire height of Mount Everest, one would need to start from this coastline, a feat accomplished by Tim Macartney-Snape's team in 1990. The ascent of Kala Patthar begins at Gorakshep (5,163 m or 16,939 ft), the original base camp for Mt. Everest.
