It has 31 prison facilities, and a Special Alternative Incarceration program, together composing approximately 41,000 prisoners. Another 71,000 probationers and parolees are under its supervision.
The Marquette Branch Prison (MBP) is located in Marquette, Michigan on the south shore of Lake Superior. The prison, which opened in 1889, is a facility of the Michigan Department of Corrections that holds about 1,100 inmates in maximum and minimum-security housing. The inmate population consists of adult males, aged eighteen and older. [2]

The original Kinross Correctional Facility was opened on January 16, 1978, on the barracks grounds of the former Kincheloe Air Force Base [3] with an original capacity of 495 prisoners - which was increased to approximately 700 shortly after. At 113 acres (46 ha) it was the largest fenced area of any state prison in Michigan. [4]
The prison was opened in 1993 and has eleven main buildings totaling approximately 303,850 square feet (28,229 m 2) and occupying 43 acres (17 ha) [1] of the 142 acres (57 ha) site. The facility has seven housing units used for Michigan Department of Corrections male prisoners 18 years of age and older.
The facility was created from the former grounds of the Michigan Parole Camp, which was across the street from the former Michigan State Prison. The prison opened in 1997 and holds 814 inmates at a minimum security level, as the common point for processing of all male state prisoners about to be discharged, paroled, or transferred.
