The museum was originally located in Level Cross but moved to nearby Randleman, North Carolina in 2003 when Petty Enterprises needed the museum's space. Randleman was chosen as a location as it was the nearest town and also the place where Richard and his wife Lynda went to high school. [3]
Level Cross is the hometown of the Petty racing family, beginning with patriarch Lee and his sons, driver Richard and engine builder Maurice. Richard was born in Level Cross in 1937 [3] and his brother Maurice was born there in 1939. [4] It was also the birthplace of their cousin, crew chief Dale Inman in 1936. [5]

Petty Enterprises (formerly Lee Petty Engineering) was a NASCAR racing team based in Level Cross, North Carolina, USA. It was founded by Lee Petty with his two sons Richard Petty and Maurice Petty. The team was later owned by Richard Petty, his son Kyle Petty and Boston Ventures.
The Richard Petty Museum was formerly in nearby Randleman, North Carolina, but moved back to its original location in Level Cross in March 2014. Petty has also voiced a role in Disney/Pixar's animated films Cars and Cars 3, playing Strip "The King" Weathers, a character partially based on himself.

Randleman is a city in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,113 at the 2010 census . It is the home of NASCAR 's Petty family, the Victory Junction Gang Camp and was the location of the Richard Petty Museum from 2003 to 2014.
