The Martian Chronicles is a 1980 television three-episode miniseries based on Ray Bradbury's 1950 book The Martian Chronicles [1] and dealing with the exploration of Mars and the inhabitants there. The series starred Rock Hudson , Darren McGavin , Bernadette Peters , Roddy McDowall , Fritz Weaver , Barry Morse , and Maria Schell .
The Martian Chronicles is a fix-up novel consisting of published short stories along with new short bridge narratives in the form of interstitial vignettes, intercalary chapters, or expository narratives. The published stories were revised for consistency and refinement. [3] [4]
In 1975, actor Leonard Nimoy's narrations of this story and Ray Bradbury's Usher II, also from The Martian Chronicles, were released on Caedmon Records. [8] In 1977, August the Fourth, 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. It used the resources of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop under the direction of Malcolm Clarke. [9]
The poem is also a centerpiece of "—And the Moon be Still as Bright" from Ray Bradbury's fix-up The Martian Chronicles. A reading of the poem is performed partially as the first verse, and completely as the final verse, in the cover of AC/DC's "For Those About to Rock" by TISM.
A reluctant Martian man is forced to join the army as they prepare to invade Earth. When they arrive, they are welcomed by a world at peace, full of people who are curious rather than aggressive. The protagonist meets a movie director, and it becomes clear that the people of Earth have planned to exploit the Martians for financial gain.
Despite its Martian setting the 1950 version of this Mars tale is set in the year 2167 (later adjusted to 2120, as various story timelines became better aligned). It is thus not a formal part of Bradbury's famous collection The Martian Chronicles which ends in the year 2057.
