While living in London Jukes develops a friendship with a beekeeper. She later moves to Oxford for a demanding job and feels miserable. Jukes begins to contemplate keeping her own bees. After she mentions this to friends, they come together during Christmas to buy her a hive of her own.
The Spinola Hours is a illuminated manuscript book of hours of about 1510-1520, consisting of 312 folios, over 80 of which are mainly decorated with miniature paintings. It was produced between Bruges and Ghent in Flanders around 1510-1520, and is a key work of the Ghent–Bruges school of illuminators.

The Leaf Hive, invented in Switzerland in 1789 by François Huber, was a fully movable frame hive, but had solid frames that were touching and made up the "box." The combs in this hive were examined like pages in a book. Langstroth read the works of Francois Huber and Edward Bevan and obtained a Huber leaf hive in 1838.

The book measures 224 by 160 millimetres (8.8 by 6.3 in), is written on parchment and contains in total 706 folios. [6] The manuscript belongs to a small group of very luxurious illuminated manuscripts produced in Flanders (probably Bruges or Ghent) during the early 16th century. It contains around 80 miniatures, including 36 full-page miniatures.
