The Archdiocese of Omaha (Latin: Archidioecesis Omahensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in northeastern Nebraska in the United States. Its current archbishop, George Joseph Lucas , was installed in Omaha on July 22, 2009.
The seminary was canonically established in 1988 by Pope John Paul II in accordance with his letter Ecclesia Dei adflicta and opened in 2000. Established in Denton, Nebraska, near Lincoln, it was founded primarily to serve English-speaking seminarians for the Fraternity from North America and to provide traditionalist Catholic education.
On October 19, 1999, Lucas was appointed the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois by Pope John Paul II.He received his episcopal consecration on December 14, 1999, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, from Cardinal Francis George, with Archbishop Gabriel Higuera and Bishop Daniel L. Ryan serving as co-consecrators.
