Patrick George Troughton (/ ˈ t r aʊ t ən /; [1] 25 March 1920 – 28 March 1987) was an English actor best known for his roles in television and film. He played the second incarnation of the Doctor in the long-running British science-fiction television series Doctor Who from 1966 to 1969; he reprised the role from 1972–1973, and in 1983 and 1985.
The original marked the transition between Patrick Troughton, who played the second incarnation of the Doctor from 1966 to 1969, to his successor Jon Pertwee, who played the third Doctor until 1974.
In the final moments of the serial, the First Doctor regenerated into Patrick Troughton's Second Doctor. The incumbent Fifteenth Doctor is played by Ncuti Gatwa, who took over the role from David Tennant following the conclusion of "The Giggle" (2023).
