Huaraz is one of twenty provinces of the Ancash Region in Peru. It was created on August 5, 1857, during the presidency of Ramón Castilla. [1] Geographically, the province is located over the Callejón de Huaylas and the western slopes of the Cordillera Negra. The Regional Museum of Archaeology is located in the Huaraz district.
The village is home to the airport serving the regional capital of Huaraz, Huaraz Province, which is on the Santa River 23 kilometres (14 mi) to the southeast. Comandante FAP Germán Arias Graziani Airport is north of the village and has scheduled service from domestic carrier LC Perú to the international airport in Lima, the national capital.

It is one of the more than 400 lakes that form part of the Huascarán National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site.
