The district is 2 miles east of downtown Nashville. The area was developed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Historically, it has been a middle class area. The area started in the early 1800s as a rural Nashville neighborhood. Many wealthy people and professionals from Nashville built estates in Edgefield. The outlaw Jesse James lived in Edgefield and his address was 712 Fatherland Street. In 1869 Edgefield became a city, and in 1880, it was annexed by the city of Nashville. [2]
The land was given to the Grand Lodge of Tennessee Free and Accepted Masons by Jere Baxter, the founder of the Tennessee Central Railroad. [2] The building was designed by Nashville architects Asmus and Norton in Colonial Revival style, and was completed in 1913–1915. [2] It housed older Freemasons and families of lower means. [2]
The Fontanel Mansion is a large log home in Nashville, Tennessee, on 186 acres of property that also contains public walking trails, a bed and breakfast inn called The Inn, the Carl Black Chevy Woods Amphitheater, Adventureworks Ziplines, the Natchez Hills Winery, one of the two Prichard's Distillery locations, Stone House Gift Shoppe, and a café called Café Fontanella.
