Levitz Furniture store during liquidation sale, December 2007. Levitz was accused of having been poorly run for more than a decade starting in the 1990s. It declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice during the period, in 1997 and again in 2005, both times emerging after a corporate restructuring and the participation of new outside backers. [3]

The Room Store was founded in 1992 in Texas by Gary Levitz, grandson of the founder of Levitz Furniture. [2] The chain started with 4 stores in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. In 1999, Levitz was killed in a plane crash.
In December 2008, Raymour & Flanigan Furniture acquired 18 Levitz Furniture store locations in the New York metro area. [ 9 ] The company launched the in-house Leadership Development Institute (LDI) in 2007, which offers workshops for idea generation, learning, and leadership.
