Joe Wheeler State Park is a public recreation area with resort features located on Wheeler Lake, an impoundment of the Tennessee River, 18 miles (29 km) east of Florence in northwest Alabama. [3] The state park contains 2,550 acres (1,030 ha) of land in three separate parcels and adjoins Wheeler Dam .
Created by Wheeler Dam along the Tennessee River, it stretches 60 miles (97 km) from Wheeler Dam to Guntersville Dam. It is Alabama's second largest lake at 68,300 acres (276 km 2), only a few hundred acres smaller than Alabama's Guntersville Lake, which is 69,100 acres (280 km 2) and is separated by the Guntersville dam from the lake.

The core of the access area consists of a visitor contact station, two picnic shelters, a small picnic area, two catch and release fishing ponds, a restroom building and a trailhead. [4] The 1.8 miles (2.9 km) Mayo Mountain Loop Trail starts at the picnic area, and it leads hikers along the ridge of Mayo Mountain.
Allan H. Treman State Marine Park offers an eight-lane boat launch and a marina that includes 370 seasonal, 30 transient and 30 dry boat slips. Boats launched at the facility have easy access to the New York State Canal System. Fishing, birdwatching opportunities (waterfowl and wetland species), and picnic tables are also available at the park. [1]
