The Henry Street Settlement is a not-for-profit social service agency in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City that provides social services, arts programs and health care services to New Yorkers of all ages. It was founded under the name Nurses' Settlement in 1893 by progressive reformer and nurse Lillian Wald.
The current VNA model finds its origins in the Visiting Nurse Service of New York founded by nursing pioneer Lillian D. Wald in 1893 to teach home classes on nursing and healthcare to poor immigrants in New York's Lower East Side. [2] Today there are over 12,000 home health care agencies listed on the Medicare database. [3]
Her ideas led the New York Board of Health to organize the first public nursing system in the world. Wald's nursing leadership was also critical to steering New York through the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. During the pandemic, she chaired the Nurses' Emergency Council, which provided visiting nursing to sick families in their homes. [7]
