New Advent was founded by Kevin Knight, a Catholic layman. [1] During the visit of Pope John Paul II for World Youth Day in 1993, Knight, then a 26-year-old resident of Denver, Colorado, was inspired to launch a project to publish the 1913 edition of the 1907–1912 Catholic Encyclopedia on the Internet. Since 1999, he was co-editor of the Fordham University Press Series in Moral Philosophy and Moral Theology. In 2016, he began editing the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars Quarterly. He was also an associate editor for the New Catholic Encyclopedia (Gale-Cengage).

In 1808, Pope Pius VII erected the Diocese of Bardstown in Kentucky, with jurisdiction over the new state of Ohio along with the other midwest states.
