The library was originally built in 1912, and was renovated in 1951, 1977, and 2009. It is named in honor of the university's fifth president, William Oxley Thompson.

Opened 1901. On property adjacent to the Library is the former Erie County Jail, built in 1883. In 1996, the Library purchased the Jail from Erie County and embarked upon a $10 million expansion project to renovate and connect the two National Register of Historic Places buildings with new space.

The library was designed by Philip Johnson as part of a three building project on campus. [3] The newly constructed library opened in January 3rd, 1993. [ 4 ] In 2011, Music and dance collections were added to the library's collection which resulted in it being renamed 18th Avenue Library.
