It's even cooler than that. This takeover happened during the 2008 financial crisis. The cool part (for me at least) is that hedge funds were shorting VW share price because everybody else's (ford, GM, Toyota and so on) price went down so VW would have to drop to reflect it's real price and acting on Porsche's word that they were not trying to acquire 75% of VW until October 2008.
Also SEAT and Skoda. In fact many of those brands' models have been lprevious-generation VW/Audi models with a minor facelift. The practice of re-using the old tooling is actually common. The infamous Yugo was an old Fiat, as was the Padmini Premier.
They’re all super similar. I’ve owned a 2013 VW Passat TDI and I now own a 2011 Audi A3 TDI. My experience so far is that Audi runs smoother, not that VW is rough though. The DSG transmission in my VW was great! But, I am digging the S-tronic trans in the Audi. Feels better to drive imo. Audi is a bit pricier, but I feel happier with my Audi.

The car has just been recalled by Audi Canada around ~3 weeks ago since it was discovered that the HV battery has water ingress which means a brand new HV battery is going in courtesy of warranty. This is not a car I would take to any indie or touch yourself due to its complexity.
