Alternanthera ficoidea, also known as Joseph's coat, Parrot leaf, is a species of flowering plant in the family Amaranthaceae. It is native to the Caribbean and South America and occurs elsewhere in the tropics as an introduced species. [1] [2] It is considered invasive in Palau, the Philippines and Australia . [2] Propagation occurs via seeds.
The plant is often cultivated for ornamental and culinary purposes. It is known as bireum in Korea; [ 3 ] tampala , tandaljo , or tandalja bhaji in India; [ 4 ] callaloo in the Caribbean ; and Joseph's coat in other areas, in reference to the Biblical story of Joseph and the coat of many colors .
Alternanthera is a genus of flowering plants in the family Amaranthaceae. It is a widespread genus with most species occurring in the tropical Americas, [2] [3] and others in Asia, Africa, and Australia. [3] Plants of the genus may be known generally as joyweeds, or Joseph's coat. [4] Several species are notorious noxious weeds. [5]
Acalypha wilkesiana, common names copperleaf, Jacob's coat [2] and Flamengueira, [3] is an evergreen shrub growing to 3 metres (9.8 ft) high and 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) across. It has a closely arranged crown, with an erect stem and many branches.
