Mark Hackel was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Ada and William H. Hackel. He is the second of three sons. He attended public schools. By high school his family had moved to Sterling Heights, Michigan, where he graduated from Sterling Heights High School. Hackel followed his father into a career in law enforcement.
