Puerto Rico's Special Olympics program was founded in 1970, since then it has offered services to more than a thousand athletes. [13] In the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games, Puerto Rico won 57 medals. A Puerto Rico Open was played between 1956 and 1967. It was a fixture on the PGA-sponsored Caribbean Tour until 1965, after which sponsors rescheduled the event to later in the calendar year. [3] The Puerto Rico Open was revived as a stop on the Tour de las Américas 2004 and 2005, before being reincarnated as a PGA Tour event in 2008.
The Puerto Rico Classic [2] was a men's professional golf tournament hosted by the Puerto Rico Golf Association and was an event on PGA Tour Latinoamérica from 2012 to 2013. [ 3 ] The tournament was hosted at the Dorado Beach Resort in both years and the inaugural winner of the event was Sebastián Vázquez .
