As of the 2000 census there were 631 residents on the island.

The Cathlamet was built in 1981, as an Issaquah-class ferry, [3] for service on the Mukilteo-Clinton route. In 1991, in order to keep up with growing demand, the Cathlamet, along with many of her sister ships were upgraded from Issaquah class to Issaquah 130-class ferries, by adding additional vehicle areas above the vehicle areas along the outside edge of the ferry.

The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry operates between Port Jefferson, NY and Bridgeport, CT, and the service currently consists of four vessels and two terminals. Each vessel contains a dual-level car deck with capacity ranging from 85 to 120, with capacity often selling out on summer weekends and holiday sailing periods.
