In 1896, the Auburn post office was the site of the first Rural Free Delivery service in Illinois, part of a nationwide test. [13] Three rural letter carriers rode 35-mile routes. [14] The experiment was well-received: some local farmers changed their post office to Auburn to take advantage of the new system. [14]
Auburn Township was created in 1859 and consisted of land taken from Anderson, Dolson, Marshall and Martinsville Townships in Clark County. According to the History of Crawford and Clark Counties, Illinois , the creation was the result of gerrymandering to facilitate the election of an unidentified influential person to be a justice of the peace.
Auburn Township is located in Sangamon County, Illinois. As of the 2010 census, its population was 6,333 and it contained 2,513 housing units. [ 2 ] It contains the city of Auburn , for which it is named, and the village of Thayer .
