It is part of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States and is the eastern terminus of Maryland Route 177. It is connected by a causeway to Pasadena, Maryland.

As of 2019, Great Fox Island was 34 acres (0.14 km 2) in size, down from 400 acres (1.6 km 2) in 1773. This has been attributed to a combination of erosion and sea level rise due to climate change.
