The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF or AAF) [2] was the major land-based aerial warfare service component of the United States Army and de facto aerial warfare service branch of the United States [3] during and immediately after World War II (1941–1947).

The AAF was founded in June 1941 as an independent division within the Army. In 1941, there were four American air fleets stationed on the American mainland. Two other units, the Philippine Department Air Force and the Hawaiian Department Air Force, were stationed in the Pacific, while the Panama Department Air Force was located in the Caribbean.
