The encyclopaedia was originally published in fortnightly parts between March 1908 and February 1910. Some readers could have bound their collections, but the first eight-volume sets were published in 1910. [1] Each section contained a variety of articles, developing topics as it progressed.
The sets reputation was also marred by complaints to the Federal Trade Commission about the practices of the encyclopedias vendors. These were Cease and Desist Orders Docket #3349 in 1938, #3428 in 1939 and #4554 in 1942. [9] Despite its annual revision, the encyclopedia was often out of date due to lax and inconstant editing.

[23] By late April 2012, the remaining copies of the 2010 edition had sold out at Britannica's online store.
