Leland (/ ˈ l iː l ə n d / LEE-lənd) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in Leelanau County , part of the northwestern Lower Peninsula of the state.
Leelanau County (/ ˈ l iː l ə n ɔː / LEE-lə-naw) is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan.As of the 2020 census, the population was 22,301. [2] Since 2008, the county seat has been located within Suttons Bay Township, one mile east of the unincorporated village of Lake Leelanau. [3]
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Lake Leelanau CDP has an area of 0.28 square miles (0.73 km 2), of which 0.25 square miles (0.66 km 2) are land and 0.03 square miles (0.07 km 2), or 9.80%, are water. [11] The outlet of North Lake Leelanau into Lake Michigan is 4 miles (6 km) to the northwest at the community of Leland.
Leland Township: This district, containing the separately listed Fishtown, contains Leland's harbor and the surrounding downtown area. The harbor contains fishing shanties, smokehouses, and docks established for the commercial fishing industry – some are still used for fishing, while others support the local tourism industry.

It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1973 [2] and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. [1] The district consists of two contiguous areas: Leland's downtown and the nearby commercial fishing area colloquially known as Fishtown. The Fishtown area was listed separately on the National Register in 2022. [3]
Leland Township is a civil township of Leelanau County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the early 2000s, the unincorporated community of Leland, which lies totally within the township, was the county seat of Leelanau County. [ 2 ]
