Founded in 1834, Kalida was the first county seat of Putnam County. [5] Kalida is a name derived from Greek meaning "beautiful". [6] A post office has been in operation in Kalida since 1834. [7] Kalida was incorporated as a village in 1839. [8] The county seat was transferred to Ottawa in 1866. [8]
