The birthplace of Apollo and Artemis according to Greek mythology, the sacred island of Delos was one of the most important Panhellenic sanctuaries during the Archaic and Classical periods. The sanctuary of Apollo on Delos attracted pilgrims from all over Greece, making Delos a prosperous trading port. It fell into decline after 69 BCE. [15]
The cave which now became the temple gateway was founded by a monk from China in 1890 who walked through the area from Ipoh. [1] The monk then decided to make the cave his home and a place for meditation where he remained until the end of his life. This was then continued by other monks and nuns. A temple was then constructed in the 1950s. [1] [2]
