Kenyon received a B.S. in physics from the University of Chicago in 1961 and a Ph.D. in biophysics from Stanford University in 1965. In 1965–1966 he was a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in Chemical Biodynamics at the University of California, Berkeley, a research associate at Ames Research Center.
In 1963, he founded Oral Roberts University (ORU) [15] in Tulsa, Oklahoma, stating he was obeying a command from God. The university was chartered during 1963 and received its first students in 1965. Students were required to sign an honor code pledging not to drink, smoke, or engage in premarital sexual activities.
His songs "Blowin' in the Wind" (1963) and "The Times They Are a-Changin' " (1964) became anthems for the civil rights and antiwar movements.
