The college was established in 1945, right after World War II. It was first called Aklan College. It occupied a building at the corner of Plaridel (now Pastrana) and XIX Martyrs Streets. In June 1948, the college moved to its present site in G.M. Reyes Street. Two years later, it faced financial struggles.
In school year 1982–83, a resolution requested a change from the name Aklan Development High School to Science Development High School of Aklan (SDHSA) to make it more suggestive of its Special Science Secondary Education Curriculum. Approval of the change of name was signed by MEC Minister Onofre D. Corpus on December 23, 1982.
