A beveled glass mirror, ca. 1910. Beveled glass is usually made by taking thick glass and creating an angled surface cut around the entire periphery. [1] Bevels act as prisms in sunlight creating an interesting color refraction which both highlights the glass work and provides a spectrum of colors which would ordinarily be absent in clear float glass.
It is therefore generally of a long and tall shape to fit the space. It may be as a hanging mirror or as mirrored glass affixed flush to the pier, in which case it is sometimes of the same shape and design as the windows themselves. This was a common decorating feature in the reception rooms of Neoclassical 18th-century houses.
The glass floats on the tin, and levels out as it spreads along the bath, giving a smooth face to both sides. The finished product has near-perfect parallel surfaces.
