Origins (1992–1997) UKTV started life as a single channel, UK Gold.The original partners behind the channel were the BBC's commercial arm BBC Enterprises and the outgoing ITV contractor Thames Television, although before the launch the American cable operator Cox Enterprises stepped in and took a majority share, 65 percent, in exchange for underwriting the costs of launching the channel.

UKTV is a commercial broadcaster owned by BBC Studios, one of the BBC's commercial units. Originating in 1992 with UK Gold, UKTV expanded its channels from 1997 onwards, with the BBC taking full ownership in June 2019. Unlike the BBC's public service channels, the UKTV channels contain advertising.
History. On 30 June 2002, UKTV announced the closure of Play UK at the end of the year, citing that the closure of ITV Digital was the reason for its demise. On 13 September, UKTV announced the closure of the channel would be moved forward to the end of September, and that to prepare for the launch of Freeview, the bandwidth space would be replaced with a new channel - UK History.
2 March. UKTV History is rebranded as "Yesterday". Corpus Christi College, Oxford are disqualified as champions of the 2009 series of University Challenge after one of their contestants, Sam Kay, was found to no longer be a student. The runners-up, the University of Manchester, are declared champions in their place.
UKTV Bright Ideas was a digital television channel broadcast in the United Kingdom, which was part of the UKTV family of channels. The channel broadcast a variety of programmes, often originally aired on UKTV Style, UKTV Food and UKTV Gardens, and are thus mainly cookery, DIY and gardening. UKTV Play was first announced in June 2014. [2] The service first launched on iOS in August, on PC, YouView and Virgin Media in November [3] and on Android in February 2015. [4] In addition, it launched on Freeview Play in August 2016, [5] on Roku and Now in February 2018, [6] and on Freesat and Samsung smart TVs in September 2018.
