Watermelon snow, also called snow algae, pink snow, red snow, or blood snow, is a phenomenon caused by Chlamydomonas nivalis, a species of green algae containing a secondary red carotenoid pigment (astaxanthin) in addition to chlorophyll.
The name Chlamydomonas nivalis is of compound Greek and Latin origin. Chlamydomonas is ultimately derived from the Ancient Greek χλαμύς (khlamús, "cloak, mantle") and μονάς (monás, "solitary"), [8] while nivalis, from the Latin nivālis, translates to 'found growing in or near snow', as this species of algae are only found associated with snow or near snowy areas.

The genus Chlainomonas is monophyletic.However, it is embedded within a clade containing most of the species Chloromonas, rendering the latter genus paraphyletic. [7] It is most closely related to other snow-inhabiting species in the genus Chloromonas, but is not closely related to Chlamydomonas nivalis, a morphologically similar red snow alga.
