The 186th Air Refueling Wing is a unit of the Mississippi Air National Guard stationed at Meridian Regional Airport, Mississippi.The 153d Air Refueling Squadron, assigned to the Wing's 186th Operations Group, was established on 18 August 1939 as the 153d Observation Squadron, one of the 29 National Guard observation squadrons formed before World War II.
In 1955, Strategic Air Command (SAC) organized the first wing to command air refueling units at Dow Air Force Base, Maine. Since then, air refueling wings have been organized by Tactical Air Command (TAC), Military Airlift Command (MAC), United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) and Air Mobility Command (AMC).

The 189th AS was activated on 1 September 1996 at Gowen Field ANGB as part of the 124th Wing. It was a tactical airlift squadron, equipped with Lockheed C-130E Hercules transports. Prior to its activation as a squadron in 1995, the unit was initially formed on 1 April 1984 as the 189th Tactical Reconnaissance Training Flight.
