The James Cook University Hospital, formerly known as the South Cleveland Hospital, is a public tertiary referral hospital and regional major trauma centre in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England with 1,046 beds. [1] It forms part of the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, along with the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.
The Trust was created in April 2006 following the merger of County Durham and Darlington Priority Services NHS Trust and Tees and North East Yorkshire NHS Trust. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] The aim of the merger was to provide a "high quality range of mental health and learning disability services for the people who live in our areas, and beyond".
The Northallerton Health Services NHS Trust was established in 1991 and ran the hospital until April 2002, when it merged with South Tees Hospital Trust. [7] [8] One year after the merger of the trusts, the Friarage received an £18 million facelift. [9]
The £37 million site opened in January 2010 (though started accepting patients in December 2009), replacing the Stead Primary Care Hospital which was also in the town of Redcar. Former Stockton South MP James Wharton opposed the plans for the new hospital, arguing that £50m should be invested in North Tees. [5] The Hartlepool Mail is campaigning to have services restored to the University Hospital of Hartlepool. In September 2021 he was appointed as the joint chair of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. On 18 January 2023 both Trusts announced the move to working together as a formalised hospital group. Under a hospital group model, each trust remains its own statutory organisation.
