Penobscot County is a county in the U.S. state of Maine, named for the Penobscot people in Wabanakik. [1] As of the 2020 census , the population was 152,199, [ 2 ] making it the third-most-populous county in Maine.
The new bridge, opened on December 30, 2006, is called the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory. The legislature's Transportation Committee originally decided it would be named the Downeast Gateway Bridge, but strong opposition by community leaders from eastern Waldo County forced this decision to be reconsidered.
