When Lucas is apprehended, he reveals to Harry that he is actually John Bateman, who unknowingly sent the bomb Vaughn had given him to the Dakar Embassy, killing 17 people. Lucas also recounts that Vaughn later killed the real Lucas North; Bateman had taken his identity. He convinces Harry to release him and rescue Maya. Lucas frees Maya.
Harry and Blake start to plan for the downfall of the meeting's plans for a new world order. Harry meets with Samuel Walker, the head of the CIA in London, to discuss this threat. Both suspect that a CIA agent is involved in the conspiracy. Walker is later killed by Sarah Caufield, Lucas North's girlfriend and the CIA mole.
Meanwhile, Harry reveals to Lucas and Ros the nature of Sugarhorse; he recruited several pro-Western Russians in the final years of the Cold War to infiltrate its government. Harry meets "Asset K" during the peace talks about the identity of the mole, only to discover somebody is setting him up as the leak.
Lucas and Ros track an MI-6 agent, Stephen Hillier, and the retiring CIA liaison officer, Libby McCall, who were part of the uranium planting scheme. Hillier is assassinated by McCall before Hillier can tell Ros the location of Harry. Lucas persuades Sarah Caulfield, McCall's successor at the London CIA station, to plant a tracker on McCall.
