The Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB or AuDB) is a national co-operative enterprise founded and maintained by the Australian National University (ANU) to produce authoritative biographical articles on eminent people in Australia's history.

He published his critical study of Henry Lawson, The Receding Wave, in 1972 and later wrote the entry for Lawson in the Australian Dictionary of Biography. [3] In the 1970s, although he had a secure position at Flinders University, he undertook a PhD on George Orwell. After its completion, he focused entirely on Australian literature and culture.
