Penstemon hartwegii can reach a height of 30–70 centimetres (12–28 in). This bushy semi-evergreen plant has simple, narrow, fleshy, mid-green leaves and racemes of bell-shaped bright-red, purple or crimson flowers, up to 4 cm long, with white markings on a wide throat. They bloom in summer and early autumn.
These 281 species of Penstemon are considered valid by both World Flora Online (WFO) and Plants of the World Online (POWO), with the exception of Penstemon grandiflorus. [1] [2] In both POWO and WFO, it is regarded as a synonym of Penstemon bradburyi.
Penstemon australis has pink to rose-purple tubular flowers with two lips. The upper lip has two lobes while the lower one has three. [3] The nectar guides are dark purple. The inside of the flower is white-lanate, covered with woolly hairs. The flower is 20–25 mm (3 ⁄ 4 –1 in) long. Flowering occurs from March through June. [2]
Penstemon watsonii is a herbaceous plant that may grow 25 to 65 centimeters tall. Its slightly hairy or occasionally smooth stems may grow outwards a short distance and then curve to grow upwards or grow straight up from the base of the plant. The stems sprout from a caudex that branches frequently. [3]
Penstemon richardsonii is a perennial that is often shrubby at the base and has several slender flowering stems that are 20 to 80 cm tall. The leaves are in opposite pairs borne on the flowering stem, are sessile (no petiole) except near the base, and are sharply serrate-dentate to irregularly pinnatifid and up to 7 cm long and 3 cm wide.
