D. Pedro de Sousa Holstein, 1st Duke of Faial and Palmela (8 May 1781–12 October 1850) was one of the most important Portuguese diplomats and statesmen in the first half of the 19th century. He also served as the country's first modern Prime Minister (with the title of "President of the Council of Ministers").
The original title was Count of Palmela, granted by Queen Maria I, on April 11, 1812) which was successively upgraded to Marquis of Palmela (by King John VI on July 3, 1823) and to Duke of Faial (by Queen Maria II on April 4, 1836). The same Queen replaced the title of Duke of Faial by the new one of Duke of Palmela (October 18, 1850).
The Castle of Palmela is located in the village, parish and county of the same name, district of Setúbal, in Portugal. In Setúbal Peninsula , in the east side of the Arrábida mountain range , it is situated between the estuaries of the River Tagus and Sado River , near the mouth of the latter.

The Palmela Palace (Portuguese: Palácio Palmela), also known as the Conceição Velha, was a summer residence in Cascais, Lisbon District, Portugal built for the Duke and Duchess of Palmela in 1874. It is considered to be a major example of the so-called summer architecture of the Cascais area.
The main entrance to the palace is guarded by the presence of two larger than life sculptures on either side of the door and the coat of arms of the Dukes of Palmela above. In 1977, the palace was acquired by the Portuguese government .
