[1] Also that year, the chain opened a store in Naples, Florida, and moved its flagship from downtown Ann Arbor to a former Lord & Taylor location at Briarwood ...
The Naples Fishing Pier was one of the area's better-known landmarks but was severely damaged by Hurricane Ian. The beach on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico is more than 10 miles (16 km) long and is known for its cleanliness and pristine white sand. In 2005, Naples was voted the best all-around beach in America by the Travel Channel. [56] [57]
Racial segregation forced black people and white people to attend different schools in Florida. The quality of education was poor for African American children. In the year 1956, two African American black women were arrested in the city Tallahassee for sitting in the front seats of a bus when they were told to sit in the back of the bus. [17]
The store was officially rebranded as Maison Blanche on March 28, 1988. In August 1991, Maison Blanche sold its Naples location and six others on the Gulf Coast of Florida to Dillard's. [8] Maas Brothers was rebranded as Burdines on October 20, 1991 after the two Florida-based stores were merged by their parent company. [9]
The original store opened in Bartow, Florida in 1896 [1] as a carriage-trade shop. Over its nearly 110-year history, Burdines grew into a popular chain of department stores, known as 'The Florida Store,' decorated with palm trees in the center of the store, painted in pink and blue, and other subtropical colors and motifs.
