A cross-figure (also variously called cross number puzzle or figure logic) is a puzzle similar to a crossword in structure, but with entries that consist of numbers rather than words, where individual digits are entered in the blank cells.
The competition consists of 15 questions of increasing difficulty, where each answer is an integer between 000 and 999 inclusive. Thus the competition effectively removes the element of chance afforded by a multiple-choice test while preserving the ease of automated grading; answers are entered onto an OMR sheet, similar to the way grid-in math questions are answered on the SAT.

Farrell was best known for constructing many crossword puzzles for The New York Times, starting in the 1970s for editor Margaret Farrar and continuing when Will Shortz took over in 1993. In 1996, he designed his most famous puzzle, the "Election Day" crossword. One of the words had the clue "lead story tomorrow", with a 14-letter answer.
