Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky [a] (16 December [O.S. 4 December] 1866 – 13 December 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist. Kandinsky is generally credited as one of the pioneers of abstraction in western art. Born in Moscow, he spent his childhood in Odessa, where he graduated from Odessa Art School.

The composition of the painting consists mainly of diagonals. Geometric shapes such as lines, circles, semicircles, triangles, squares, a checkerboard pattern and a black area in the center of the crossing figures, as well as a larger brownish-gray trapezoid, are reminiscent of the Russian painter Kazimir Malevich and his suprematist style, which Kandinsky understood and admired.
